SS 316 is the right choice for any tube clamp that will see salt air, seawater or chlorides. SS 304 is the economical choice for indoor, washdown and food-grade lines. The difference is molybdenum. SS 316 contains about 2% of it, which gives it far better resistance to chloride pitting.

Choosing the wrong grade is the most common reason stainless steel tube clamps corrode early. This guide explains how to choose correctly.

What Is a Stainless Steel Tube Clamp?

A stainless steel tube clamp is a DIN 3015 pipe support clamp made wholly or partly from stainless steel. It grips the tube around its full circumference, holds it in position and damps vibration. It is specified where coated mild steel would rust.

There are two builds:

  • Stainless hardware with a plastic body:a polypropylene or polyamide body with an SS 304 or 316 cover plate, weld plate and bolt. This is the most common and economical corrosion-resistant build.
  • Fully stainless steel clamp:an all-metal body for high temperature, fire-safe, hygienic or aggressive-chemical service where no plastic is acceptable.

Both follow DIN 3015 dimensions, so they fit the same layouts and rails as standard clamps.

SS 304 vs SS 316 at a Glance

Factor SS 304 SS 316
Key alloy difference Chromium-nickel Adds molybdenum (~2%)
General corrosion resistance Excellent Excellent
Chlorides, salt air, seawater Limited, with pitting risk Strongly resistant
Acids and harsh chemicals Moderate Superior
Best for Indoor, washdown, food-grade, mild chemical Marine, offshore, coastal, harsh chemical
Relative cost Lower Higher

When to Choose SS 304

Choose SS 304 when the environment is corrosive but chloride-free:

  • Indoor process plants
  • Washdown areas
  • Food-grade lines
  • Mild chemical exposure

When to Choose SS 316 or 316L

Choose SS 316 wherever chlorides are present:

  • Marine decks and engine rooms
  • Offshore platforms
  • Coastal plants
  • Desalination and brine lines
  • Swimming pool plant rooms
  • Aggressive chemical processing

Rule of thumb: if the clamp will ever see salt air or seawater, specify 316.

Stainless Hardware or Fully Stainless Body?

Use stainless hardware on a plastic body for most marine, washdown and chemical-splash duty. Move to a fully stainless body when the line is hot, the area is fire-regulated, or the surface must be cleanable. Food, dairy and pharmaceutical lines often need an electropolished finish that resists build-up and withstands clean-in-place washdown.

Where Stainless Steel Tube Clamps Are Used

  • Marine, shipbuilding and offshore piping
  • Oil, gas and petrochemical instrumentation lines
  • Food, beverage and dairy processing
  • Pharmaceutical and biotech piping
  • Chemical dosing
  • Water treatment and desalination

How to Specify a Stainless Tube Clamp

  1. Grade:304 for general corrosion resistance, 316 or 316L for chlorides.
  2. Configuration:stainless hardware on a plastic body, or a fully stainless body.
  3. Series:DIN 3015 Part 1 (light) for low-to-medium pressure, or Part 2 (heavy) for high pressure and large bore.
  4. Tube OD and finish:size to the tube’s outer diameter, not the bore. Add electropolishing for hygienic service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SS 304 and SS 316 tube clamps?

SS 316 contains added molybdenum, so it resists chlorides, salt air and seawater far better. SS 304 offers excellent general corrosion resistance at lower cost.

Which stainless steel clamp is best for marine and offshore use?

SS 316 or 316L. SS 304 is not recommended for permanent marine exposure because of pitting risk.

Are stainless steel tube clamps fully stainless or only the hardware?

Both exist. The common build pairs a plastic body with stainless hardware. A fully stainless body is used for high-temperature, fire-safe or hygienic service.

Can stainless steel tube clamps be used in food and pharmaceutical lines?

Yes. Electropolished stainless clamps resist product build-up and withstand clean-in-place washdown.

Are stainless clamps interchangeable with STAUFF, Parker or Swagelok?

Yes. They follow the same DIN 3015 dimensions, so they are fit-for-fit replacements with no layout change.

Pipe Clamp vs Hose Clamp vs P-Clip: What Is the Difference and Which Should You Use?

A pipe clamp supports and damps a rigid pipe or tube. A hose clamp seals a hose onto a fitting. A P-clip, also called a cushion clamp, lightly holds hoses, cables and thin-wall tubes. They look alike but do different jobs, and using the wrong one is a common cause of leaks, rubbing and fatigue cracks.

What Is a Pipe Clamp?

A pipe clamp, also called a tube clamp or hydraulic pipe clamp, fastens, routes and supports pipes, tubes and hoses along a wall, frame, skid or machine. A standard DIN 3015 pipe clamp has:

  • Two clamping jaws (clamp halves) that close around the pipe
  • A weld plate or mounting plate that fixes the assembly to the structure
  • A cover plate and a hex bolt that tighten the jaws evenly around the pipe

Its real job is damping. In hydraulic and pneumatic systems, pressurised fluid makes pipes pulse, shake and resonate. A well-engineered clamp absorbs that vibration, reduces noise, stops rubbing and prevents fatigue cracking at fittings and welds.

What Is a Hose Clamp?

A hose clamp, such as a worm-drive or band clamp, squeezes a flexible hose onto a barb, spigot or fitting to prevent leaks or pull-off. It is a sealing and retention device. It is not designed to support a pipe run or damp vibration.

What Is a P-Clip or Cushion Clamp?

A P-clip or cushion clamp is a rubber-lined clamp for hoses, cables and thin-wall tubes. It gives light, cushioned support but cannot handle the loads that a rigid, high-pressure line produces.

Pipe Clamp vs Hose Clamp vs P-Clip

Factor Pipe / tube clamp Hose clamp P-clip / cushion clamp
Main job Support and damp rigid lines Seal a hose onto a fitting Lightly hold hoses and cables
Vibration damping Yes, a core function No Limited
High-pressure lines Yes (DIN 3015 heavy series) Not a support device No
Standard DIN 3015 Varies Varies
Typical use Hydraulic, lube, instrumentation Fluid hose connections Wiring, light hose routing

Which One Do You Need?

  • Rigid steel or stainless tubing on a machine, skid or wall:use a DIN 3015 pipe clamp.
  • A flexible hose slipping off a fitting:use a hose clamp, not a pipe clamp.
  • A cable bundle or thin hose with little vibration:a P-clip or cushion clamp is enough.
  • Lines that pulse, shock or run at high pressure:use pipe clamps, with the heavy series where pressure or tube size demands it.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a hose clamp to support a pipe.It does not damp vibration, so the pipe works loose and fatigues at the fitting.
  • Using P-clips on high-pressure hydraulic lines. They cannot absorb pressure surge.
  • Choosing a clamp sized to the bore.Pipe clamps are sized to the tube’s outer diameter. Even a slightly oversized clamp lets the pipe vibrate.

Choosing the Right Pipe Clamp

Match five factors:

  1. Tube outer diameter in mm or inches
  2. Working pressure and vibration level (light series or heavy series)
  3. Environment (plastic, aluminum or stainless components)
  4. Layout (single, twin or stacked)
  5. Mounting method (weld plate, bolt-on or rail)

Bullion Pipe & Tubes LLP manufactures the full DIN 3015 range: hydraulic pipe clamps, light duty tube clamps for general lines up to 76.1 mm OD, and heavy duty tube clamps up to 219 mm OD. We also supply cushion clamps and P-clips for hoses, cables and thin-wall tubes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a pipe clamp the same as a hose clamp?

No. A pipe clamp supports and damps a rigid line. A hose clamp seals a flexible hose onto a fitting.

Can I use a hose clamp to hold a hydraulic pipe?

No. Hose clamps do not damp vibration or absorb pressure shock, so the pipe can fatigue and crack.
